It installed fine on 10.6.8. I don't know what Kindle version is needed for SL 10.6.x, but I came across the oldest I could find of kindle for mac version 1.5.1 of 2010 era if it will work: Direct download via download kindle for mac 1.5.1 free (mac).
The current Kindle for Mac version is offered on the Mac App Store (1.10.6) and is the present one available for download. Check to see if iTunes has any older versions available: In the future, posting a new thread can increase the number of people who see your question and can help in getting a faster response. Today I got an email from Amazon.co.uk which read: 'It's time to update your Kindle for Mac app! We appreciate the time you've spent reading with our Kindle for Mac app, but you have registered a version on one of your computers that is out of date and scheduled to be retired by September 15. Our latest update (version 1.11.0 or above) is still free, and includes important bug fixes that are required to continue using the app. You can easily download and install the latest version of the Kindle for Mac from our download page on Amazon.' So I proceeded with the link provided to download the latest version.
I have MacOS 10.6.8 and assumed it would just all work fine. Installation was a simple drag-and-drop to the Applications folder, however the Kindle icon had a weird crossed-out sign on it.
The old version of my Kindle app was 1.10.5 and that was over-written when I dragged the new version to the Applications folder. And lo and behold the new version didn't work with Snow L. Same issue, received the same email from Amazon. Also still run 10.6.8 on 2 of our MacBooks.
Thanks for the heads up - I came here looking for whether to trust the 'command' from Amazon to upgrade my Kindle software. Dear Amazon folks, couldn't you do what other reputable software vendors have been doing for years, and put a 'system requirements' info on the documentation for these recommended upgrades when they come out? Why is it that the giant in the room (Amazon, in this case) always forgets his manners? Good manners = happier customers. I totally agree, I got the same email and downloaded and 'installed' the new version of Kindle app on my iMac and now it won't open but instead my computer screen says 'You can't use this version of the application Kindle.app with this version of Mac OS X: You have Mac OS X 10.7.5. The application requires Mac OS X 10.8 or later.' My Kindle app worked perfectly until I took the advice of this email from amazon and now I have no Kindle app.
Well this is the only app or program that has ever complained about my OS X version so I have very little reason to update my OS X which is a nerve-wracking proposition but out of love of my Kindle books I considered it and went to the Mac App Store and read dozens of 1-star reviews of crying people who regret updating to the OS X 10.10.5 which is currently the only OS X available to me so I won't do it and now I have no Kindle app on my Mac! With any other app download, such as OpenOffice, there are a variety of versions available and ofte. I'm glad I read this discussion. I got the email too and wanted to make sure it was legit.
If I'm understanding this thread correctly, it means that if I upgrade my Kindle for Mac App, it won't work anyway, because I also have OSX 10.7.5. Doesn't bode well for getting any more Kindle books. I don't like cloud reader. Nor do I intend to get a new OSX for this, as too much expensive software would break.
So this is bad news for me:( The crazy part is that I stood by physical books for a long time, fearing this very issue. Finally caved and started buying eBooks. Sometimes new is not better. Why can't I expect Amazon to supply an app that works perfectly well on a 3 YEAR OLD MACHINE? I can still get spark plugs for my 2010 automobile. That's FIVE years old.
And don't tell me it's not the same. It's EXACTLY the same. Do you own stock in Apple or something? Why are you defending Amazon? This is just RIDICULOUS, all your smug pronouncements of 'old' software to the contrary. 3 years is not old for anything, except maybe milk. And the least Amazon could do is WARN THE USER that downloading an upgrade is going to make KINDLE UNUSABLE.
And a HUGE THANKS to all the people who warned us, since Amazon didn't. You saved me a lot of grief and many others I'm sure. After many months of planning to upgrade OS versions, today I updated my 2007 Macbook to 10.6.8 from Leopard to find that. I can no longer use Kindle for Mac! I understand when technology offers better functioning software and MAYBE better security that updates will be needed, but now I have Kindle books I can no longer read on my device. I cannot upgrade to 10.7 without having to update a dozen other apps that I use for work, so I'm stuck with Kindle books that I can't read on my machine. PS - As an author trying to sell actual books on Amazon, I now can no longer tell my customers, 'Oh, you don't need a Kindle, just download the Kindle App and you can read my book on your computer.'
Now it's 'MAYBE you can read it on your computer if you have the latest operating system or you have a slightly older computer and are willing to upgrade to the latest operating system (and lose many of your older applications), or you're willing to buy a new Mac (because your old one won't handle the new operating system).' Wow, that's really good for business (sarcasm). And yes, I have exactly this question from MANY customers. 'I don't have a Kindle so can I still read your book?'
I USED to be able to say 'yes.' So yeah, more than just an annoyance here.
